Breaking: LA Attorney General's Agents Raid New Orleans ACORN Office

BigGovernment.com is reporting on some developments out of Louisiana this afternoon regarding state action against the community organizing group ACORN:
News of the raid comes from Marcel Reid and her colleagues at ACORN 8, an association of former ACORN leaders and board members. Many of the individuals involved with ACORN 8 were fired from ACORN for demanding a forensic audit following an embezzlement scandal involving Dale Rathke, brother of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke.
According to NOLA.com: Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has served a search warrant at the ACORN office at 2609 Canal Street, according to Tammi Arender Herring, a spokeswoman with the office.
Investigators in khaki pants and polo shirts loaded several dozen computers and other electronic items into an SUV. They are also carrying records out of the building on handcarts.
The large office building sits at the corner of Dorgenois and Canal. ACORN staffers were given no notice that a search would be conducted today, Herring said.
Whole story here. From WDAM in New Orleans:
Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said a warrant was obtained to seize computers, hard drives and other documents after ACORN attorneys said two unidentified former employees took computers and other items when they left the organization. Caldwell said investigators will copy records and hard drives, then return them to ACORN. He said the original allegations of embezzlement were made last year by ACORN board members who were fired after they asked for a forensic examination of the group’s books. ACORN fired the longtime director of its Louisiana chapter last month, citing a lack of accountability. Whole story here.
The ‘longtime director’ of ACORNS’s Louisiana chapter is Beth Butler, the longtime companion of ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke. Stay tuned--I'll try and keep you updated as more info becomes available...

Where are the Jobs?

As you may have heard, the latest numbers on unemployment were released today and merely provide a metric for what Americans across the country have known for a while now; the economy still has not recovered. These numbers, which have broken the double digit mark for the first time in 26 ? years, clearly indicate that the President’s Stimulus package has done nothing that it was intended to do, which was to make the recession shorter and shallower. You will remember that President Obama’s economic advisors indicated that with the passage of the so-called ‘stimulus package,’ unemployment levels would not exceed 7.8%. Now, as we stare down the face of unemployment levels of 10.2%, it begs the question, Mr. President, where are the jobs?

Dems Press On With Radical Agenda, Despite Voters' Objections

As hundreds (maybe thousands) of protestors gathered at the Capitol today to protest government-run health care options being floated around Congress, Democrats pressed onward in pursuing their agenda:
Reuters is reporting that a Senate committee led by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) approved a "climate change" measure over the objections of Republicans. In fact, the GOP Senators boycotted the vote en masse in protest. The measure in question would "require U.S. industry to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases 20 percent by 2020, from 2005 levels."
"I think this is a great signal for Copenhagen that there's a will to do what it takes to advance this issue," committee Chairman Barbara Boxer told reporters after her panel voted.
Bloomberg is reporting that despite a perceived repudiation from voters in Tuesday's elections, the House Democratic leadership is proceeding with plans to vote as early as tomorrow on the massive $1 trillion government health care takeover. To ensure support, President Obama himself plans to visit Capitol Hill tomorrow. Forget the Dems having lost major elections on Tuesday. Pelosi rejects the idea that the party has lost momentum: “From my perspective, we won,” she said.
And if all this weren't enough, the Associated Press is reporting that Democrat Senators voted today to BLOCK a proposal submitted by Louisiana Senator David Vitter to include a simple question in the upcoming 2010 U.S. Census. The question? "Are you a U.S. citizen?" (Apparently Dems don't think we should ask...)
That's funny. I thought the purpose of the Census was to figure out how many citizens we have living here. It's also used to proportion congressional districts according to population. Hm... I wonder who would benefit from the Census counting a disproportionate number of illegal aliens undocumented citizens...?

AP Points to More Discrepencies in Obama Job Numbers

The Associated Press is still not satisfied with the White House's accounting figures of jobs "saved or created" by Obama's stimulus:
President Barack Obama's economic recovery program saved 935 jobs at the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, an impressive success story for the stimulus plan. Trouble is, only 508 people work there. The Georgia nonprofit's inflated job count is among persisting errors in the government's latest effort to measure the effect of the $787 billion stimulus plan despite White House promises last week that the new data would undergo an "extensive review" to root out errors discovered in an earlier report. About two-thirds of the 14,506 jobs claimed to be saved under one federal office, the Administration for Children and Families at Health and Human Services, actually weren't saved at all, according to a review of the latest data by The Associated Press. Instead, that figure includes more than 9,300 existing employees in hundreds of local agencies who received pay raises and benefits and whose jobs weren't saved. That type of accounting was found in an earlier AP review of stimulus jobs, which the Obama administration said was misleading because most of the government's job-counting errors were being fixed in the new data. The administration now acknowledges overcounting in the new numbers for the HHS program. Elizabeth Oxhorn, a spokeswoman for the White House recovery office, said the Obama administration was reviewing the Head Start data "to determine how and if it will be counted." But officials defended the practice of counting raises as saved jobs. "If I give you a raise, it is going to save a portion of your job," HHS spokesman Luis Rosero said. Big props to the AP for staying on the story and holding the administration accountable. I wonder how long before the White House's "reality check" website accuses the AP of "misleading" reporting again. To read the rest of the report, click here.

"Gang of 12" House Conservatives Taking on Party Leadership

Bill Hennessey over at BigGovernment reports that a small band of conservative House Republicans met Tuesday to form a steering committee and to get the ball rolling in bringing the GOP back to its conservative roots.
Rep. Michele Bachmann, one of the group's most outspoken members, is calling on Americans this week to rally Thursday at the Capitol in protest of Obamacare. On Fox's "Hannity," Bachmann reported that radio talk host and best-selling conservative author Mark Levin will be joining her in the rally. However, noticeably absent from Bachmann's rally cry is the support/acknowledgement of GOP leadership:
Before the Hill brass swooped in to “help” organizers by providing speaker lists and talking points, a band of conservatives formed a steering committee to keep the message and the tactics authentically conservative. These rebels don’t want talking points; they want a battle cry. Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) hosted the meeting of a dozen Hill conservatives who’ve had enough. The meeting was to help Michele Bachmann, and other originators of the House Call protest, retain control of the event and the message. Until now, Mr. Akin and a few others in this Gang of 12 preferred keeping a low profile. Emboldened by the grass roots effect in New York’s 23rd Congressional District race, Akin is determined to go on offensive for conservative principles rather than just fending off Democrat advances. Last week, for example, Akin recruited eight House Republicans to endorse Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman, in the NY-23 race, even while the National Republican Congressional Committee was pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars to boost Scozzafava. Tuesday’s meeting included Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Ms. Bachmann, Doctors Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey (Rs-GA), Dr. Michael Burgess (R-TX), and others who are willing to take on their own party’s heirarchy. According to Mr. Akin, “This steering committee is full of risk takers who’ve been pushed out of their comfort zone” and are willing to fight for principle. Akin cited an emerging “sense of camaraderie among conservatives” in the House.
Hooray for active conservatives taking a stand!

Heritage: Congress Funds Study on How to Avoid Constituents, Stay in Office

From the Heritage Foundation's blog, The Foundry, this study was mentioned during Glenn Beck's radio show this morning:
This Friday, the tax payer funded Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) is hosting a briefing for Members of Congress and their staff on their new study: Online Town Hall Meetings: Exploring Democracy in the 21st Century. The CMF study consisted of 21 townhall meetings where Members of Congress and CMF provided a moderator: “spoke via voice over IP, and constituents asked questions and made comments by typing them. Only off-topic, redundant, unintelligible, or offensive questions were screened, and only questions asked by people who had not yet asked a question were prioritized.” CMF does not say what qualifies as offensive, but if this summer is any indication that definition would include anything that the Congressman did not want to talk about. In other words, this report urges Congressmen not to actually interact with their constituents, but to avoid them altogether by holding safe townhalls they can completely control. And what did CMF find where the results of these Potemkin townhalls? The online town halls increased constituents’ approval of the Member. Every Member involved experienced an increase in approval by the constituents who participated. The average net approval rating (approve minus disapprove) jumped from 29 before the session to 47 after. There were also similar increases in trust and perceptions of personal qualities – such as whether they were compassionate, hardworking, accessible, etc. – of the Member.
Congress is actually using your tax dollars to pay social scientists to find ways they can avoid actually talking to their constituents while improving their chances of reelection.

Another Expert Lawmaker Apparently Doesn't Know How to Pay Taxes

Roll Call is reporting that Texas Rep. John Carter (R) today admitted failing to report $48,000 in capital gains from stocks sold in 2008--this in addition to the approx. $300,000 he acknowledged misreporting between 2006 and 2007.
I will never understand: why is it so hard for lawmakers and policymakers to pay their darn taxes?

Debt-Riddled CA Government Borrowing From Workers' Paychecks

The LA Times reports:
Starting Sunday, cash-strapped California will dig deeper into the pocketbooks of wage earners -- holding back 10% more than it already does in state income taxes just as the biggest shopping season of the year kicks into gear.
Technically, it's not a tax increase, even though it may feel like one when your next paycheck arrives. As part of a bundle of budget patches adopted in the summer, the state is taking more money now in withholding, even though workers' annual tax bills won't change.
Think of it as a forced, interest-free loan: You'll be repaid any extra withholding in April. Those who would receive a refund anyway will receive a larger one, and those who owe taxes will owe less. ...The extra withholding may seem like a small amount siphoned from each paycheck, but it adds up to a $1.7-billion fix for California's deficit-riddled books...

More On The Stimulated Job Saving Bonanza

We already knew this:
Featherbedding occurs when paychecks are issued for nonexistent employees and the money goes directly into union coffers. Thousands of the jobs Obama officials say were saved or created by the stimulus program are no more real than those invisible positions invented by unions to bulk up their treasuries.
But The Washington Examiner puts it in impeccable context:
Congress could have passed a one-pager saying the first 650,000 jobless persons to report for work at the White House will receive a voucher worth $230,000 redeemable at the university, community college or trade school of their choice... taxpayers would be better off with such a deal, too.

Barack Obama's Guest List: White House Response
|

Since some controversial people like William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright and Malik Shabazz appeared on the White House guest list, the WH has made the following statement:
A lot of people visit the White House, up to 100,000 each month, with many of those folks coming to tour the buildings. Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few “false positives” – names that make you think of a well-known person, but are actually someone else. In September, requests were submitted for the names of some famous or controversial figures (for example Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly ("R. Kelly"), and Malik Shabazz). The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House. Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.

Dozens (of Dems) In Congress Under (Ethics) Investigation

So far, all known suspected offenders in this latest round of sleazy politician bingo are Democrats:
House ethics investigators have been scrutinizing the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aides in inquiries about issues including defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling, according to a confidential House ethics committee report prepared in July.
The report appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network, and it was provided to The Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations. The committee said Thursday night that the document was released by a low-level staffer.
The ethics committee is one of the most secretive panels in Congress, and its members and staff members sign oaths not to disclose any activities related to its past or present investigations. Watchdog groups have accused the committee of not actively pursuing inquiries; the newly disclosed document indicates the panel is conducting far more investigations than it had revealed. ...
The investigation includes some old news ::cough:: Charlie Rangel ::cough::. But there are also a couple of new suspicions popping up around members like Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-W. Va.).

Liz Cheney Slams Obama's Dover Salute

Earlier this week, President Obama traveled to Dover Air Force Base--with the White House press corps in tow--to pay tribute to fallen soldiers returning from the battlefield. Reportedly, only one of the fifteen families asked agreed to the photo-op and Liz Cheney, daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, sounded off during a radio interview yesterday. (Partial transcript below)
I don't know why he went to Dover. I mean I think that clearly it is very important for our commander-in-chief whenever he can, in whatever way possible to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers, our fallen military folks.
But I think... you know what President Bush used to do is to do it without the cameras. And I don’t understand sort of showing up with the White House Press Pool with photographers and asking family members if you can take pictures. I just... that’s really hard for me to get my head around. I think it's an honorable and important thing for us to pay tribute. There’s no greater sacrifice people make to the nation. But...it was a surprising way for the president to choose to do it.
I would also point out the best way to pay tribute to those who sacrifice is to win the war.
