AP Points to More Discrepencies in Obama Job Numbers
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:12 AM
The Associated Press is still not satisfied with the White House's accounting figures of jobs "saved or created" by Obama's stimulus:
President Barack Obama's economic recovery program saved 935 jobs at the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, an impressive success story for the stimulus plan. Trouble is, only 508 people work there.

The Georgia nonprofit's inflated job count is among persisting errors in the government's latest effort to measure the effect of the $787 billion stimulus plan despite White House promises last week that the new data would undergo an "extensive review" to root out errors discovered in an earlier report.

About two-thirds of the 14,506 jobs claimed to be saved under one federal office, the Administration for Children and Families at Health and Human Services, actually weren't saved at all, according to a review of the latest data by The Associated Press. Instead, that figure includes more than 9,300 existing employees in hundreds of local agencies who received pay raises and benefits and whose jobs weren't saved.

That type of accounting was found in an earlier AP review of stimulus jobs, which the Obama administration said was misleading because most of the government's job-counting errors were being fixed in the new data.

The administration now acknowledges overcounting in the new numbers for the HHS program. Elizabeth Oxhorn, a spokeswoman for the White House recovery office, said the Obama administration was reviewing the Head Start data "to determine how and if it will be counted."

But officials defended the practice of counting raises as saved jobs.

"If I give you a raise, it is going to save a portion of your job," HHS spokesman Luis Rosero said.

Big props to the AP for staying on the story and holding the administration accountable.  I wonder how long before the White House's "reality check" website accuses the AP of "misleading" reporting again.  To read the rest of the report, click here.

Fiorina Announces Bid for U.S. Senate
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:09 AM
California Senator Barbara Boxer (D) will be facing some serious competition in her upcoming re-election bid.  Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has announced her bid for Boxer's Senate seat.  Fiorina will first face a Republican challenger, conservative state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in a June primary election.

Fiorina's name might sound familiar to some: she was a top economic advisor to then-presidential candidate John McCain during his failed presidential campaign against President Obama.

In her candidacy announcement, Fiorina voiced concerns over unemployment and "too much spending in Washington."  She also voiced her opposition to current health care proposals being considered in DC, saying "we should build on what works" instead of "remaking the entire healthcare system."

Why Maine Stinks For The Gay Rights Movement
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 11:06 AM
1. They lost was in New England, where they're supposed to have a stronghold.

2. They outspent traditional-marriage advocates by over 2-1.

3. They poured in man-hours and lobbying efforts from other states, and they couldn't even steal it that way.

4. Democratic Governor John Baldacci had enthusiastically thrown his support behind the law, and was roundly rebuked.

5. They got a little momentum from Washington State, which approved their gay marriage referendum, but no one really cares. Meaning that all eyes are on Maine, and everyone saw them fail.

"Gang of 12" House Conservatives Taking on Party Leadership
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 10:48 AM
Bill Hennessey over at BigGovernment reports that a small band of conservative House Republicans met Tuesday to form a steering committee and to get the ball rolling in bringing the GOP back to its conservative roots.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, one of the group's most outspoken members, is calling on Americans this week to rally Thursday at the Capitol in protest of Obamacare.  On Fox's "Hannity," Bachmann reported that radio talk host and best-selling conservative author Mark Levin will be joining her in the rally.  However, noticeably absent from Bachmann's rally cry is the support/acknowledgement of GOP leadership:
Before the Hill brass swooped in to “help” organizers by providing speaker lists and talking points, a band of conservatives formed a steering committee to keep the message and the tactics authentically conservative. These rebels don’t want talking points; they want a battle cry.

Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) hosted the meeting of a dozen Hill conservatives who’ve had enough. The meeting was to help Michele Bachmann, and other originators of the House Call protest, retain control of the event and the message.

Until now, Mr. Akin and a few others in this Gang of 12 preferred keeping a low profile.  Emboldened by the grass roots effect in New York’s 23rd Congressional District race, Akin is determined to go on offensive for conservative principles rather than just fending off Democrat advances. Last week, for example, Akin recruited eight House Republicans to endorse Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman, in the NY-23 race, even while the National Republican Congressional Committee was pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars to boost Scozzafava.

Tuesday’s meeting included Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Ms. Bachmann, Doctors Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey (Rs-GA), Dr. Michael Burgess (R-TX), and others who are willing to take on their own party’s heirarchy. According to Mr. Akin, “This steering committee is full of risk takers who’ve been pushed out of their comfort zone” and are willing to fight for principle. Akin cited an emerging “sense of camaraderie among conservatives” in the House.

Hooray for active conservatives taking a stand!

Re: Pessimism in NY-23
Posted by: Kevin Glass at 12:45 AM
No, it has not been good news at all for Doug Hoffman in NY-23. The polls that showed Hoffman picking up huge steam since Scozzafava dropped out (PPP and Siena) were off. It could be that the big numbers of undecideds were scared off by Hoffman's third-party ID at the poll and went with what they knew: the major-party Democrat candidate. Needless to say, after important wins in Virginia and New Jersey, NY-23 has turned out to be a bit of a letdown.

New Jersey Voters Reject Negative Campaign of Jon Corzine
Posted by: John Hanlon at 11:33 PM
In a major victory for the Republican Party, Chris Christie is now the Governor-elect of the state of New Jersey...

It is good to see that the voters of that state rejected Jon Corzine and the nasty campaign that he waged, including the focus on Chris Christie's weight

In his acceptence speech, Christie just spoke about the negative personal attacks from this campaign. Instead of dwelling on them, he focused on moving forward for the state of New Jersey.

Which Way Will They Go?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:47 PM
With Republicans winning gubernatorial races in both New Jersey and Virginia, it's clear that a number of Dems may be in serious trouble in next year's elections.  And so a moment of decision has arrived for the Washington Democrats who have been heedlessly leading their representatives off a far-left cliff.

Will they trim their sails so as to avoid an electoral debacle next year -- or, realizing that they may well be in serious political trouble no matter what they do, will they simply run harder and faster to encode as much of the left-wing wish list as possible into law before it becomes more difficult after 2010?

Christie Takes NJ, Making It A Two-Governor Sweep
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:16 PM
Both Politico and the WSJ are calling it. Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell are the two governors in charge

The White House has lent it's hand to the Democratic campaign efforts in those states, but White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says the White House isn't paying attention:
I don't think, looking at the two gubernatorial races, you can draw with any great insight what's going to happen a year from now.
Whether or not these elections are bellweathers is the subject of heated debate, especially with the NY-23 results. still pending....

Most political building in the world isn't watching politics tonight
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 10:11 PM
Washington (CNN) – President Obama is not planning to watch Tuesday nights election returns, Obama aides Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod tell CNN.

Obama is more likely to watch Tuesday night's Chicago Bulls game than any political coverage, according to Axelrod.

The president's senior staff have also decided not to hold a watch party to keep an eye on election returns as they come in.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was spotted in workout clothes leaving the White House campus at 7 p.m. ET, just as polls were closing in Virginia. Axelrod told CNN he has a dinner outside the White House to attend

Election Night Party With Jillian Bandes
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 8:32 PM
The ouster of "moderate" Republican Dede Scozzafava in New York's 23rd congressional district, the tight race between multimillionaire Democrat Wall Street vet Jon Corzine and Republican upstart Chris Christie in the New Jersey governor's race, and Bob McDonnell's probable victory over Obama-endorsed Creigh Deeds in the Virginia governor's race have combined to make this off-year election much more interesting than usual.

GOP Takes Virginia: Exit Poll Analysis
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 8:23 PM
Some key factors in the GOP's victory in Virginia from the Associated Press:

---Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell's victory in Virginia over Democrat Creigh Deeds is definitely a triumph for the GOP as the party looks to rebuild.  Virginia went to Obama just a year ago by 6 points... now it has had a significant swing among independent voters back to the GOP.

---"Early returns in Virginia showed that by a 2-1 margin McDonnell was winning rapidly growing, far-flung Washington, D.C., suburbs — places like Loudoun and Prince William counties — that Republicans historically have won but that Obama prevailed in last fall by winning over swing voters."

---"Independents...were a critical part of the diverse coalition that carried the president to victory in Virginia and across the country. But after more than a year of recession, still early in Obama's term, they fled from Democrats in a state where the economy trumped all."

---"The Associated Press exit polls showed that nearly a third of voters in Virginia described themselves as independents on Tuesday...They preferred McDonnell by almost a 2-1 margin over Deeds in Virginia."

---"The surveys also suggested the Democrats had difficulty turning out their base, including the swarms of first-time minority and youth voters whom Obama attracted as part of his coalition."

---Virginia voters reported their top concern was the economy.

---More than four in 10 voters in Virginia said their view of Obama factored into their choice on Tuesday, and those voters roughly split between expressing support and opposition for the president.
