Do you think Senator Obama's pick of Senator Biden will help him in the election?

If it weren’t for the fact that some upstanding conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter had been so outspoken about their antipathy to John McCain, I would have suspected that the campaign being waged against the man had been entirely manufactured by James Carville and underwritten by George Soros.

As I’ve written elsewhere, Sen. McCain was not my first choice or even my second or third. I would have preferred Newt Gingrich. Of those who actually got into the race, I initially backed Giuliani, but once he dropped out, I wound up voting for Mitt Romney in the California primary. I’m sorry my guys struck out, but I’ll be far more miserable if the Democrat wins in November, and, frankly, I don’t know why every Republican doesn’t feel the same way.

It strikes me that a lot of my conservative brethren have taken their eye off the big picture. By threatening to stay home in November rather than risk sullying their conscience by voting for an imperfect Republican, they’re saying they’d prefer to see a perfect Socialist waltz into the Oval Office.

Even though McCain isn’t the candidate of my dreams, I find it unbelievable that there are Republicans who honestly believe he’d be as awful as the anti-military, tax-raising, left-winger he’ll be facing off with in the fall. The mere fact that, as president, he wouldn’t be appointing ACLU-approved justices to the Supreme Court and that, unlike the opposition, he takes Islamic terrorism seriously strikes me as reason enough to support the guy.

Like Ann Coulter, however, I would prefer to see Hillary Clinton win the election. But unlike Ms. Coulter, the race I want to see her win is the one against Barack Obama, not the one against Sen. McCain. The reason I’d rather see Mrs. Clinton at the top of the ticket isn’t just that I think Mr. Obama would be a stronger candidate. It’s because if McCain loses the election, I think the gutless Republicans in the Senate and the House would find it easier to oppose her liberal agenda than to confront President Obama and risk being labeled racists by the left-wing media.

Having gotten that off my chest, I’d like to suggest it’s high time we picked up where Lady Bird Johnson left off with her program to beautify the cities of America. For openers, how about if we tent Berkeley, California, and at long last fumigate the place? It wouldn’t even cost that much, as I’m pretty sure a bunch of ex-Marines would happily volunteer to get the job done.

And, finally, speaking of volunteers, where the heck do they find the schlimiels who stand behind political candidates while they give speeches? I used to wonder about those jackasses who were always lined up in back of Jesse Jackson while he mouthed off, but now it’s become commonplace.

I’m not too proud to admit that it would be far beyond my limited acting ability. I can barely stay awake when I’m looking at a politician whose mouth is moving. If I were staring at the back of his or her head and not only had to keep from nodding off, but appear alert and interested, they’d not only have to pay me a great deal of money, but they’d have to pay someone else to stand behind me and poke me with a sharp stick.

Subject: big picture
The really big (global) picture of which too many conservatives remain unaware is that we don't have four years to "teach the Republican party a lesson".

Iraq is just the tip of the iceberg of a global Islamist danger against which the United States is the only possible bulwark. Iran is next up to the plate while Russia stirs up trouble it thinks will bypass it. Loose cannons like North Korea and Venezuela abound. 9/11 should have removed all illusions that the USA can pull up the drawbridge and become an impregnable fortress. She cannot control even her own southern border without citizen consensus.

Any additional weakness in foreign policy like both Democrat candidates' plan to snatch defeat from victory in Iraq leaving American allies hung out to dry a la Vietnam and apologizing profusely to America's enemies will be fatal this time around. The childish Dems with their Obamamania are too stupid to realize this. Conservatives will have to be the adults again.

Conservatives need to give the Republicans a crash course in humility by voting for them but reminding them every day of their congressional and presidential lives that they are on parole and will be spanked hard if they dare take that vote as instruction to be bipartisan. Ask them the last time a Democrat did anything bipartisan? They play for keeps and Repubs have to learn how to play hardball too. Stiffen their spines for them. The Harriet Miers' and amnesty routs are the blueprint to follow.

Staying home, or pulling a lever and complaining only among ourselves for four years is not an option this time.

Remember Prelutsky's succinct summation of the choice: an imperfect conservative or a perfect socialist. The USA is on the ropes. It cannot survive a socialist in these critical years.

Had the shoe been on the other foot, I would be suffering and you would be rejoicing. Had Romney, rather than McCain, been the nominee, I would be exactly in your place.

I would have been in the "silent treatment" mode. I do understand how you feel. Please, only one small request I make, double-check every jot and title concerning your most acclaimed McCain-diversion. I did my complete homework concerning Romney. But if you do make every single effort to give John McCain a fair Military Tribunal, then I will always respect your judgment in withholding your much coveted vote.

Your fan, aDNA
