I think my taxes would go up if this person were elected President:

Former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm resigned Friday from his role as GOP presidential candidate John McCain's campaign co-chairman, hoping to quiet the uproar that followed his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" whose constant complaints about the U.S. economy show they are in a "mental recession."

Gramm, a past presidential candidate, made the remarks more than a week ago. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they brought a steady stream of criticism just as McCain is trying to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.

Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down to "end this distraction."

"It is clear to me that Democrats want to attack me rather than debate Senator McCain on important economic issues facing the country," Gramm said. "That kind of distraction hurts not only Senator McCain's ability to present concrete programs to deal with the country's problems, it hurts the country. To end this distraction and get on with the real debate, I hereby step down as co-chair of the McCain campaign and join the growing number of rank-and-file McCain supporters."

Gramm made the comment to The Washington Times and later explained that he was talking about the nation's leaders not the American people. Democrats claimed at the time that the Gramm comments showed that McCain is out of touch with voters' concerns over high gas prices, the struggling housing industry and the shaky economy in general.

The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Gramm's departure will make little difference to McCain's economic policies.

"The question for John McCain isn't whether Phil Gramm will continue as chairman of his campaign, but whether he will continue to keep the economic plan that Gramm authored and that represents a continuation of the polices that have failed American families for the last eight years," said Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan.

"Who can legitimately stand up against a dem president and say they can't do that after the repubs just ran it through twice??"

Ok. Then maybe someone here can explain how continuously increasing the costs to "the wealthy" will benefit us all? How can a nation become prosperous taxing its citizens more? How can a nation compete in the global market by making it more expensive to create jobs, products, services, et. al?

No one seems to want to answer those questions; particularly those that want to see it happen. But, I'll wait.

"Inflation is a real problem for people."

Yes, it is. There are worse forms that will hit people even harder. Remember stagflation? No matter how bad the economy gets, you can bet your future that government can, and will make it worse, when it tries to keep market corrections at bay.

Americans do not have the right to an economy that is recession, or inflation free.

"Are you in the stock market? It's been a great year, hasn't it?"

Not bad, all things considered, still better than what government offers. It all depends on your position in the market. I remember the dot com bomb, and folks nearing their retirement having to watch their accumulated wealth go belly up with nothing but silence from the administration that was in power at the time.

I notice that you have outlined several issues, but you have merely pointed out what is obvious with very little solution. I'm interested to know what you think the government can do about this that the market cannot.

YES, YES We are Whiners
We are indeed a nation of whiners. Everyone is a victim of something or someone. A nation of whiners can never be great, and our greatness as a country is fading fast.

The loudest whiners are liberals. They never accept responsibility for anything. They love spending other people's money, supporting victims, and the louder one whines, the more they love ya., especially if the whining is anti-american.

McCain is a loser. He has milked his POW status far too much. What glory is there in being a POW? What if the majority of our soldiers had been POW's in past wars? Would we have won any of the wars with most of our soldiers having been captured and taken as POW's. I do not see the glory in being a POW.

Thank you, McCain for serving your country, but you could have been more effective had you not been a POW. You may have been tortured, but others died on the battlefield while you spent time in the Hanoi Hylton. I'm sure they would have traded places with you. So, please quit glorifying your POW status.
