COMMAND CHANGE: Hector Ruiz, 62, is done as CEO at chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. after six turbulent years. He now is executive chairman.

NEXT UP: The new CEO is Dirk Meyer, 46, an engineer and chip designer who had been No. 2 at AMD since 2006. Meyer previously led AMD's main business unit.

WHY NOW: AMD's financial struggles are only getting worse. The company said Thursday its loss widened to $1.19 billion in the second quarter, from $600 million a year ago.
