BOTTOM LINE: Profit rose steadily to $4.3 billion but missed Wall Street's expectations by a penny per share as Web advertising business weakened.

CRYSTAL BALL: The software maker forecast double-digit sales growth in 2009, despite plans to spend hundreds of millions more than expected to perk up its search and online ad performance.
